WP Smush WordPress Image Optimization Plugin

image optimization

welcome back to another episode today I'm going to be demonstrating a plugin that helps you to optimize the images on your wordpress powered website so the plugin I'm going to show you is a very popular one is called WP Smosh we're going to search for that now here so WP Smosh image optimization it reduces the image file sizes it improves the performance and boost your SEO using the free WPmu dev WordPress Smosh API the reason why it's making this claim about improving your SEO is because page load times is a ranking factor for google and the larger the images are the slower your website will load so the theory is and the verdict is that if you have optimized images your website will load faster and hence do better in the search engines all other things being equal and optimized alright so let's

go ahead and take a look at some additional information it's active on over 500 thousand active WordPress installations has five-star reviews and a lot of reviews at that is recently updated so let's install it once you install it and activate it you can go into the settings area so in the settings area you can go over some of the options that it has currently there's no images on the server itself this is my

local development environment and it's a fresh installation of WordPress so this is the screen is going to present you with you can start uploading images here this shows you which images it's going to optimize and if you don't want to optimize a particular image you can uncheck it here and it's set to automatically smush these images you see it's toggled on here if you want to preserve the image exif data photographers might want to

do this you can talk with this option on here and if you want to resize the original images you can do that here as well so let's say we want to do this and let's say we want to keep it at 11:40 by 641 all right so we're going to see how that impacts these savings now this is very particular to the theme you're using so you may want to obviously choose the

proper width and height that suits your needs if we make any changes update the settings and then you're going to see that um we can now go to the process of optimizing so we're going to add a new image I'm going to go to my desktop and I'm going to drag in a new image to process alright so now we have the images being crunched and processed and now we can take

a look at the how the images alright so we see that four images reduced by ten point four kilobytes in total 4.2 percent well look at the sizes now remember the full size is skipped because in order to optimize the actual original image you would need the professional version of this plugin which is a paid version also by default it is skipped but the other thumbnail options which are the post thumbnail the large

the medium and the thumbnail itself they are optimized and they are reduced in terms of their file size so if we see this image now and we go to the Edit screen for it the file size has been reduced to one hundred and nineteen kilobyte now let's see what the original file size for the image was so in order to do that I'm going to show you the actual properties of the image

itself for my computer alright so we can see here that the original image size was 264 kilobytes and the details on that was because there was a 1280 by 720 so we reduced the dimensions of the image which also helped to reduce the file-size itself so by reducing the width and height and also optimizing it we were able to save a considerable amount of space on the server for that particular image and also the

file size which would be used in the browser where your website visitor is going to be visiting so that's going to help you both in your page load times and with your search engine optimization efforts because page speed and load time is a ranking factor that Google utilizes to determine the ranking position of a website on the search engines all right so you see that this website um that this plug-in WP Smosh does

indeed reduce the file size by a significant amount and also helps you to adjust the width and height of the uploaded image that way you can fit your theme properly it's a very good plugins via the free version has some really good features that you can check out and definitely use this on your site it's pretty much a set it and forget it type of plugin you just set it the first time

put in your proper settings for your type of website and then every time you upload a new image it will automatically optimize the image for your site it's very beneficial it's user friendly and if you want to look for more options as well you can check out the premium version of it over here to the WP smush and we'll see what those are you see it gives you an estimate of the pro

savings estimate and then some of the other advanced options are super smush my images gives you two times more compression power you can merge the original full sized images as well he can make a copy of the original images you can convert PNG to jpg as well so you can find out some more information about that on their site but the free version gives you pretty much what you need out of the

box for image optimization and compression of images you upload and use in your website definitely recommend it it's very easy to use user friendly it is battle-tested it's been around for a very long time and it has a good team of people behind it with wpm you who has been in the WordPress space for our significant amount of time pretty much since the beginning so check it out see if it's going to help
